Dina Goldstein photography..

When I read blogs I often comment when I think the photos are looking pretty sweet. It is a weakness of mine.. Despite lacking the camera skills myself, I'm all about the photography appreciation. When I came across the photographer Dina Goldstein I knew that she was doing something pretty special.
I'd always thought of myself as someone who preferred documentary photography over studio or posed shots. That was until I saw Dina Goldstein's Fallen Princesses project..

Despite starting off as a photo journalist, Dina Goldstein soon realised she preferred collaborating with others and wanted to showcase her talent of visual story telling.

Fallen Princesses depict fairy tale characters in a modern day setting.. And not quite so 'happily ever after'! Cinderella with a drinking problem? Snow White's husband a layabout? A particular favourite of mine is Pocahontas the cat lady!

Goldstein's most recent project 'In the Dollhouse' takes a look at Barbie and Ken's less than perfect life. As you can probably tell in this picture from the series, things are not quite as they seem..

As much as Goldstein's work has opened my eyes to this different photography style, for me nothing beats a simple candid picture. To me the photo below is beautiful.. And you all know how I feel about old people!

What do you guys think? Has this made you see Disney Princesses in a different way? Who are your favourite photographers?

  1. I'm going to be completely cliche and say Tim Walker - I just can't get enough of his whimsical images, I'd love to think his photos are what the inside of my mind looks like.

I think the Fallen Princesses are very clever because they incorporate today's society into the fairytale ideal. xx

  2. The Ken Doll gets me every time. It's just so perfect. I kind of want it to be Rylan Clark as Ken though. Even more perfection.

Red looks like a Down South American. It's hilarious.

  3. Amazing photographs and I am going to take a look at her website now. I do think staged photography telling a story is always quite poetic in a way. Controlled story telling. xx
