An introvert's travel guide to Tokyo

Before travelling to Tokyo I was told to prepare to be overwhelmed. It was going to be loud, bright, colourful and completely in your face.
And while all of that was kind of true, spending time discovering the Japanese capital city was so laid-back, organised and friendly that it was impossible not feel completely at home.

That's way more than I ever have done in London.

The plan was to explore every inch of the city. OK, so we didn't quite manage that in the ten days we had, but we definitely gave it a good go.

Easing ourselves into our time away we spent the first part of our trip sneaking peeks at the more traditional parts of the city from our base in Bunkyo, discovering hidden streets, shrines and walking for miles.

That's the only way to do it, right?

After a few days acclimatising we moved to an insanely beautiful Airbnb apartment near Harajuku and it was time to visit Shibuya Crossing, Tsukiji fish market and take a couple of road trips.

We saw some weird things.

We saw some Instagramable things.

And there was one time we nearly saw Mount Fuji. But didn't.

For us, the perfect ten days in Tokyo consisted of getting lost in huge multi-storey buildings full of stationery, finding the tastiest (and cheapest) sushi, unexpected UFO machine treats and spotting the very last of the blossom.

And the drinks. Oh, the joy of finding a vending machine with a drink we hadn't tried yet.

An introvert doesn't need any other advice apart from this: if you ever get the chance, always say yes to ten days in Tokyo.

  2. This is such a good post! I'm not an introvert but I do like some quiet time so I have wondered about visiting huge cities, such as Tokyo. It looks really cool and very different from what I am used to!

  8. What a great insight - [I'm an introvert too] my partner and I watch the NHK World channel [all about Japan] and wonder if we'll ever really make the effort to get there. You're photos and thoughts are an inspiration!
