How I wear: BURJU jewellery..

When I posted about statement necklaces last week I left one important detail out: I have no idea how to wear them.

So when BURJU got in touch about their statement pieces I was petrified. An item of jewellery like that seemed totally out of my league. I quickly came to the conclusion I would need a whole new wardrobe just to accommodate something this snazzy.

But it wasn't new clothes I needed. It turns out the only thing missing in my wardrobe was a jewellery item just like this.

Nope, I didn't need fancy.. I simply let my necklace do fancy for me.

Necklace: BURJU*
Oversized sweatshirt: ASOS
Shirt and jeans: Topshop

Adding my new necklace to an every day outfit suddenly stepped it up a notch. It took a jeans and sweatshirt combo from 'Yeah, I'm ready..' to 'HELL YEAH I'm ready!' Not to mention all the compliments I've had so far..

BURJU jewellery is the creation of Burcu Kilic, an independent designer based in the UK, with each unique piece individually handmade. (She also just so happens to be lovely too..) Burcu managed to find five minutes in her busy schedule to talk jewellery inspiration..

So, how did you get started with BURJU?

I started as a graduate in fashion and textile design, specialising in embellishment design. I landed my first job at a well known high street label, but when the company made a few of it's staff redudant it gave me the boost to try out having a go on my own. Jewellery came to me instantly!

And what's your inspiration for the jewellery collection at the moment?

Modern architecture (I love the gherkin building and the shard!) but the Swarovski beads were the real inspiration. The colours actually came together accidentally. There was a lot of experimenting and layering until beautiful surface textures were created!

I also use perspex, chains and cords. I didn't want these pieces to look traditional, but create something unique and contemporary, yet still wearable.

Now you've launched online, what are your plans for the future?

Currently I work from my bedroom, which is a great part-time studio/ bedroom/ living space. I love what I do, but I also have a full -time job too (a freelance designer) so I can't spend as much time as I'd like on BURJU. In the future I would love to create exclusive ranges for well-known boutiques, and of course work on my label full time.

And look! My new favourite necklace has even got the stamp of approval from Tiddles, who's #fblogger pose definitely has potential..

The last date for ordering a BURJU piece to arrive in time for Christmas is next Wednesday and you can follow Burcu's jewellery journey on Instagram too.

Let's all start making more of a statement with our accessories, yeah? And what better statement than to support an independent designer who creates frikkin' lovely jewellery?!

What do you think of the BURJU collection?
